Xenophobia is deep-rooted fear towards foreigners and this sometimes results in violence. In recent times, xenophobia has accelerated rapidly in the western countries. The fear of losing identity, suspicion of its activities, aggression, or desire to eliminate its presence to secure a presumed purity are some of the predominant reasons for the rising incidence of Xenophobia. The preventative measures should be employed by the government and individuals to cope with.

The incidents of the outbreak of Xenophobia violence in South Africa is on rising. In the latest incident, Xenophobic attacks occurred on Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa. The rights groups and individuals calling on the Nigerian government to take sterner measures, instead of employing the diplomatic option. The possible solution to this rapidly growing problem in western countries is to prosecute and punish the perpetrators.

To prevent and combat xenophobia and hate crimes, there is strong need to strengthen the laws and the role of law enforcement officials. The perpetrators should be held legally accountable for the criminal acts and hate motive. Enforcing punishable offense against Xenophobic conduct and its unacceptability in society will send a strong message to the society that hate crimes and Xenophobic conduct will not be tolerated. Further, rights groups, individuals and government should accelerate awareness programs on “rights of foreign nationals” and educate people “to respect the basic human rights” and not to indulge in “hate crimes”. Insulting anyone on the basis of race, religion, or any other trait should be strictly criticized.
