The 3rd part of PTE Academic exam is Listening. This section tests candidate’s ability to understand spoken English in an academic environment. The individual questions in PTE Academic Listening are not timed with the exception of summarize spoken text. You will get a fixed time of between 45 and 57 minutes to complete the entire Listening section.

To get a high score in PTE Listening it is important to know the format and details of each section while preparing. It gives you an edge in the actual exam. PTE Academic Listening: Overview

PTE Listening module involves candidates to possess various sub-skills like listening for specific information.

PTE SUMMARIZE SPOKEN TEXT

“Summarize Spoken Text” is the first section in the listening module. You are required to summarize a recording text in 50-70 words. You are given 10 minutes to finish this task.

PRO TIP: You will score less if you write more or less than the prescribed word limit.

A high score response in PTE Academic Listening: Summarize Spoken Text would contain word limit of 75 to 80, has mentioned all the main points and contains no grammatical or spelling mistakes. Divide the time given for this task wisely.

PTE MULTIPLE-CHOICE, CHOOSE MULTIPLE ANSWERS

In ‘Multiple Choice, Choose Multiple Answers’, the candidate needs to choose more than one response to a question about a lecture. In this task, more than one option can be marked as the response.

Before the audio begins, read the question and skim the options quickly. It will get you the main idea of the lecture that you are about to listen. After you listen to the audio, read each answer choice correctly and fully. You can simply eliminate answer choices that are completely out of context. As the wrong answer choice carry negative marking (-1) so mark the response only if you are confident.

PTE LISTENING: FILL IN THE BLANKS

In PTE Listening – Fill in the Blanks, audio content will be given along with a text, with 3-5 blanks. You have to listen to the audio and need to identify the missing words. In the 7 seconds before the audio starts, quickly skim the text to get a general idea of what the topic is all about. As you hear, fill in the blanks by typing out the word quickly. You won’t get any mark for wrong spelling so do not make spelling mistakes.

PTE HIGHLIGHT CORRECT SUMMARY

In PTE Highlight Correct Summary, you will listen to a short lecture and then need to select the correct summary of the lecture that you just heard. In the 10 seconds that you get before the audio starts, skim through the 4 summaries to get an idea of the topic’s theme. It will prepare you for what you are about to hear.

To get a high score in ‘Highlight Correct Summary’ section, choose the summary that incorporates all the main points of the audio lecture.

PTE MULTIPLE-CHOICE, CHOOSE SINGLE ANSWER

In PTE Multiple Choice, Choose Single Answer, you have to identify “one correct response” to a question from the audio played about a lecture. You have to choose the option that suits to the asked question. Before the recording starts, read the question prompt carefully—this will give you an idea about what to listen for.

Most questions ask for speaker’s main focus or an overall summary of the listening content. Some questions will be based on the details of the content. If you read the prompt carefully, you will get the response.

PTE SELECT MISSING WORD

In PTE Select Missing Word, an audio will be played and towards the end of the recording, you will hear a beep. From the set of answer choices, you will need to predict word or group of words, that completes the recording. You will choose the option based on contextual clues in the recording.

The correct response should fit in with the context of the speech you have just heard. Follow the audio progress indicator to help you anticipate the ending.

PTE HIGHLIGHT INCORRECT WORDS

In PTE Highlight Incorrect Words, the transcription of a recording appears on the computer screen. As you listen to a recording, you need to identify the incorrect words that differ from the transcript, by clicking on those words.

Use the 10 seconds before the recording begins to skim through the transcript quickly so that you are prepared for what you hear. Don’t forget to keep your cursor at the beginning of the text.

In PTE Write From Dictation, a recording plays and you have to type the sentence as you hear, word for word in the box provided. You have to write what you have heard without any spelling errors. You will get the score for each correct word in your response. You won’t get any mark for missing words, incorrect words and wrong spelled words.

The PTE Academic Listening module tests integrated skills like writing and reading along with your listening skills. Start preparing for the PTE exam well in advance. Keep in mind below given points while appearing for the actual exam.
